Hallbergmoos, 20 December 2017 – This year has been a year to remember for Eurofighter Typhoon, with major contracts on, key milestones reached and strategic targets hit — all pointing to a bright future for the programme.

Volker Paltzo, Chief Executive Officer for Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH, says: “Throughout 2017 we have been given countless positive indications that Eurofighter Typhoon will continue to be the aircraft of choice for many of the world’s leading air forces for many years to come – most recently with the welcome news that the State of Qatar will become the ninth country in the world — and the fourth in the Middle East — to choose Typhoon.”

The news that the Government of Qatar and BAE Systems have entered into a contract for the supply of 24 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft was announced in December. This latest contract success brings the total number of aircraft ordered for the Eurofighter Typhoon programme to 623.

December brought confirmation that production had started for the Eurofighter Typhoon for the State of Kuwait. Under the contract to supply 28 Eurofighter Typhoon, Leonardo and other Eurofighter partner companies have started work on what will be the most advanced variant of the fighter jet yet, including a new E-Scan radar and several new additions to the weapon system.

As the Eurofighter fleet continues to grow, significant progress continues to be made on the capability front too, with work to integrate Storm Shadow, Meteor and Brimstone.

Volker Paltzo said: “The addition of the deep strike cruise missile Storm Shadow, Beyond Visual Range (BVR) air-to-air missile Meteor, and the precision attack missile Brimstone, will significantly increase the operational performance of the Eurofighter Typhoon as we go forwards.” 2017 also saw the Sultanate of Oman take its first deliveries of Eurofighter Typhoon to Adam Air Base, Oman.

The last 12 months have been the busiest ever for Typhoon forces, clocking up the most combat hours of any new generation swing role aircraft, with air forces taking part in operations and exercises across the globe.

In addition, it has been performing 24 / 7, carrying out NATO air policing duties and QRA activities for the Eurofighter nation air forces, while, as part of NATO Air Policing duties, the aircraft has been deployed from the Baltics to the Black Sea, with recent Royal Air Force, Luftwaffe and Italian Air Force deployments including Romania, Estonia and Bulgaria respectively.

Volker Paltzo summarised: “2017 has been a year to remember for Eurofighter Typhoon.  What is certain for the year 2018 is that Eurofighter Typhoon will be ready, whatever the challenge. “In terms of future prospects, our industry partners: Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo, together with their governments, are working closely on a number of campaigns in a number of regions across the globe.  I speak for the Eurofighter consortium when I say that I am very confident that we will see further orders internationally for Typhoon.”
